How can I clean my stainless steel pistol at home?

Ive had my xdm 40 subcompact for idk about 2 months now maybe 3 it was a gift from my mom i havent really had the money for a cleaning kit so i was wondering if thier was anything i could use to polish or lube the pistol at home tips on where to lube please im new to this i do have this really old looking gun conditioner from Kleen Bore is the name maybe it doesnt need to be lubed or cleaned i havent fired it yet :/

1. You can use ridiculously cheap pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil as a cleaning AND lubricating solution.

2. Wal-Mart sells cleaning rods and brush heads separately - You don't need to purchase an entire cleaning kit. You don't need a jag, or slotted, tip. All you need is a 40 caliber bronze brush.

3. Take any old cotton rags you've got around the house and cut them into 40 caliber cleaning and oiling patches. (I, myself, did this for many years.) Simply wrap your patch around the brush head for first, and final cleaning passes. Use the brush in between. In a pinch you can, also, use Kleenex tissues to do much (but not all) of the wiping and lubricating work on your gun.

4. You can, also, use ordinary (medicine chest) Vaseline petroleum jelly as a slide and trigger lube. Another common lubricant that works well is motor oil. Only thing is that I don't like getting a substance that's been chemically designed to work INSIDE of combustion engines on my own skin.

5. After you've wiped the slide down real good, you can use ordinary car polish in order to, 'wax' the exterior METAL parts. The mineral oil I told you about works extremely well on polymer frames and actually seems to rejuvenate them.

6. If you've got some Latex or Nitrile gloves and a little Kerosene you can use the Kero as a cleaning solution, too. Another great bore cleaner I really like, and use all the time, is Flitz metal polish. With just the inexpensive parts and chemical solutions I've mentioned you can keep that XD(m) spotlessly clean and well lubricated.

Most of these items are on my EDC Glock right now; AND it has, also, been cleaned per the above recommendations.
